We’re Knit Together
Seven skeins of wool in heirloom white.
Grass and sunshine transformed
with the care of a farmer’s steady hand.
Cashmere from goats in Peru.
Merino sheared from sheep in Spain.
Needles clack methodically
like my persistent heart
blessing every stitch
with every beat.
So you may always know
you are cloaked with love;
imperfect and beautiful
knit from generations of hurt and healing.
Wear it on your shoulders
and walk with the power
our female ancestors instilled in us,
with the rhythm of their hands
and the intention in their hearts.
A way to twist fibers;
our lives forever threaded together.
Note from Laura:
I made this sweater (and poem) for my sister in an effort to return the indescribable love she has always shown me. It’s impossible to materialize love, but if I could, this would be it. This botanical yoke pullover is the most precious knitted creation I’ve ever made. Like my love for my sister, I may never get over it.
